As part of Destin's "Clean City Initiative," city leaders are looking for volunteers to participate in the Adopt-A-Street program.
"It's a really easy way to help keep your city clean," said Councilman Jim Wood, who has adopted a portion of Main Street along with his wife Renee and his daughter Meghan.
"It would be nice to have some more participation."
The city's Adopt-A-Street program invites businesses, individuals, civic groups or any other organizations to adopt a section of a city street by helping to pick up trash.
And Wood is leading by example. Wood and his family come out at least once-a-month to clean up their portion of Main Street, where they find everything from glass bottles and drink cups to broken pieces of wood, cigarette butts and sprinkler marking flags.
"Go out and get some fresh air and some sunshine, while picking up some trash," he said. "It's good for you."
Tim Pietenpol, from the city's public services department, told The Log that the Adopt-A-Street program has been around as long as he has been employed by the city, which is 15 years.
"We used to have quite a few more participants, but it fizzled out for a while," he said. "We are hoping to bring it back to life again."
Participants who adopt a street would commit to the program for three years and would help pick up trash on a quarterly basis. Cleanup dates are in the first Saturday in January, April, July and October from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
For each area adopted, the city will place a sign with the volunteers or organization's name, recognizing them for their commitment to help keep the city clean.
Local Realtor Lisa Snuggs has participated in the program for the past three to four years. Both personally and through Keller Williams Realty, Snuggs is responsible for multiple roadways in Destin, including a stretch of Mountain Drive near Palmetto Street.
"I think everybody should give a little bit of their time to help keep things beautiful," she said. "It's just the right thing to do."
