Rocky Bayou Christian School’s Destin campus was out in force last Friday, as students canvassed the city participating in service projects.
“This is our first Work-a-thon in Destin,” said RBCS Destin Principal Joe Quilit.
Quilit explained that Rocky Bayou’s Niceville campus has been hosting annual community service days for as long as he can remember, but this was the first for the Destin campus which opened in 2012.
“We had trouble getting people in that neighborhood that needed help,” Quilit said, “Mary Ready was the only resident in Destin that we cleaned up.”
Mary Ready, a weekly contributor the Destin Log, wrote her response to the service project in her Saturday column, “Ready or Not.”
Other crews of children and adult volunteers worked at the Destin Methodist Church food bank, and repaired the fences, and cleaned a memorial at the First Baptist Church of Destin. Quilit shared that the school prefers to get into the neighborhood and lend a hand, as opposed to working on church related projects in order to give the children a greater sense of community service.
Quilit’s daughter Keilana was one of the students helping with yard work.
“It was really fun to help them because I’ve been doing it every year,” she said, “It made me feel good inside.”
