It’s the first week of summer vacation for Okaloosa County, and for 24 Destin kids that means half-day summer camp at Destin Community Center. The kids arrive at 8:30 a.m. and are entertained with different activities every 15 minutes until noon.
“We are having camp every week of the summer that they are out of school, except the week of July 4th,” said Parks and Recreation Program Coordinator, Nick Coleman. “The main thing is kids having fun. We teach them a new game every day, we want them to try something new, try something different.”

During the first two days, the kids learned sports such as Bocce Ball, Four Square, and a basketball shooting game called Knockout. The favorite was surprisingly Bocce Ball, a slow, bowling-like game popular in France and Spain.
“When I first looked it up I thought it would be too complicated for them, but they love it. I was really surprised,” said camp leader Sheri Bethea.
Also available throughout the day were craft projects, snacks, and team-building games that challenged the kids to work together to reach a common goal. The community center is offering a slew of different focused camps throughout the summer, and has openings for students, kindergarten through fifth grade, for both the focused camps and the half-day weekly camps.
