A four-man crew was hard at work Wednesday putting up what will soon be a permanent AT&T cellular tower near Barnes and Noble Booksellers on Emerald Coast Pkwy. The temporary AT&T tower that has been functioning out of a truck will be removed once work on the permanent structure is complete.
“It’s going to be a flag pole,” said Eugene Brauer, a sub-contractor with Wireless Solutions. “Your 4G network will be better when we finish this.”
In year’s past, there has been a series of complaints from AT&T customers on The Log’s Facebook page, saying that service left a little bit to be desired during the summer season, which is why the temporary tower was brought in.
After The Log shared the news of the tower’s construction on Facebook, there was plenty of jubilation.
Amber Utton wrote “coverage is fine in the off-season. Now, not so much,” while Debbie Palmer said “So glad!” Visitor Kenny Wyss had just spent a week in Destin and “all six of us had horrible coverage while there.”
Brauer told The Log that the crew has been working on the tower since Monday, and work should be wrapped up by the end of the week. Fiber-glass panels will disguise the cell tower and a 12-by-18 foot American flag will fly from top.
