Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed that the beautiful historic Magnolia tree positioned in front of the old Lucky Snapper building is suddenly dying. My question is … is it coincidence that this magnificent tree is suddenly dying so that a money-making zip line can be run above it?
On Sept. 15, 2010, in a Destin Log article posted on Emerald Grande's Blog spot (http://emeraldgrande.blogspot.com/2010/09/did-you-know-that-there-is-200-year-old.html) they proudly announced that the tree living down at the harbor was more than 200 years old. They went on to say how much a part of Destin's fishing history was literally "tied" to that tree. Legendary CEO Peter Bos had even laid his beloved dog Teddy to rest under that tree more than 13 years ago.
"The magnolia tree has overseen many changes in Destin and still stands as a symbol of what is best about our 'Luckiest Fishing Village', the merging of our valuable traditions and a vibrant, forward looking community," Bos told The Log
Now it appears that this beautiful symbol may not be around much longer thanks to those two towers linked together by a couple of wires.
