Home Depot may be the latest retailer victimized by hackers, as the Atlanta-based company is currently investigating “unusual activity.”
A report surfaced earlier this week alleging that the home improvement retailer’s computer systems could have been breached from a period beginning in May until now, according to an article on CNN Money.
When The Log contacted the company, spokeswoman Paula Drake said Home Depot’s forensics and security teams have been working “around the clock since we first became aware of a potential breach.” She said they were working with IT firms, including Symantec and FishNet Security.
“There is no higher priority for us at this time than to rapidly gather the facts so that we can provide answers to our customers,” Drake wrote in an email. “We know these types of incidents can cause frustration and concern and we apologize for that.”
While an actual breach has yet to be confirmed, Drake told The Log that in the event a data breach can be determined, “our customers will not be responsible for any possible fraudulent charges.” The company will also offer free identity protection services, including credit monitoring, to any potentially impacted customer. She urged customers of Home Depot to closely monitor their accounts and contact their card issuer if they notice any unusual activity.
If Home Depot is affected, the company would join the likes of Target, Albertson’s, Michaels, Neiman Marcus, P.F. Chang’s, and SuperValu as retailers and restaurants that have fallen victim to cyber hacks.
