40 years ago — 1974

The state Department of Natural Resources was advertising for commercial harvesting of sea oats from designated state-owned land, prompting concern from Destin residents who had been purchasing and planting sea oats to control erosion along the coast.

The Destin Water Users Board appointed Howard Ray Shoults as director to succeed the late Chubby Destin.

 

35 years ago — 1979

Interest rates of 13 and 14 percent were cutting back Destin’s real estate market as much as 30 percent.

Jim Brechin was named 1980 chairman of the Destin Fishing rodeo.

The new Destin Church of Christ on Beach Drive was dedicated.

 

30 years ago — 1984

Matt Burns received the Destin Fishing Rodeo Good Neighbor Award.

The new city of Destin learned its first council election fell on Christmas Eve, and it was too late to change the date.

After months of wrangling, the stage Department of Environmental Protection announced it would issue a permit for Destin Water User’s submerged water line under Old Pass Lagoon to Holiday Isle.

 

25 years ago — 1989

The Destin Chamber of Commerce hired James Olin of Gainesville as its executive director.

The “Destin Dolphin Savings Bank,” a join project of AmSouth Bank and Destin Elementary PTO, opened at the school to help students learn how to save money.

 

20 years ago — 1994

Destin heard a new sound on the airwaves as Mark and Renee Carter presented their new radio station, Seabreeze WSBZ 106.3.

With no decision made by government or law enforcement, The Log made the decision for kids to trick-or-treat on Monday, Oct. 31 after checking with City Hall and the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Department.

The Panhandle Ostrich Breeders Association offered chefs and the public the opportunity to become more familiar with ostrich during a day-long seminar and dinner.

The board of directors for the Destin Snowbirds arrived to begin working on plans for the season.

The Track in Destin offered unlimited rides and an outdoor concert featuring Truth for only $10.

A Georgia man on Capt. Ken Beaird’s boat weighed in a 284 pound Warsaw to take the lead in the decision and another angler brought in a 52.4-pound Kitty Mitchell.

A new incentive program, Destin Dollar, at Destin Elementary was used to reinforce good behavior.

Destin angler John Lucas took the lead in the shark division at the Rodeo with a 108.3-pound dusky.

 

10 years ago — 2004

Jerry McClellan won the blue ribbon “Award of Excellence” for one of his creative hot glass art pieces at the 2004 Destin Festival of the Arts at Henderson Beach.

For the second consecutive year, Mick Ryland of Destin was awarded the Agency Hands in the Community award for his commitment to volunteering in the community. He received a $500 grant from The Allstate Foundation for the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation, where he volunteers.

Today’s was vote best women’s clothing store and best women’s accessories for the fourth consecutive year in the “Best of the Emerald Coast” competition.
