The Department of Airports plans to ask Okaloosa County Board of Commissioners to consider a “re-branding” effort in 2015.
Northwest Florida Regional Airport has an identity problem, according to a recent study.
The results of that study concluded that the current name is perceived as “vague,” “generic” and is generally confusing as it is strikingly similar to a nearby airport, according to a release from the county.
Their recommendation is that the name be changed to Destin-Ft Walton Beach International Airport.
The proposal will be made at the commission’s regular scheduled meeting on Jan. 21.
“Many of the people flying here are vacationing along our beautiful beaches in Destin and Ft. Walton Beach,” the release said. “Currently, 72 percent of airports are named after the primary municipalities they serve.”
The new name was suggested by Market Dynamics Research Group, a research firm located in New Orleans, LA, which researched the issue.
