A stretch of roadway along Hutchinson Street from U.S. Hwy. 98 to Scenic Hwy 98., will soon see improvements to its pedestrian walkway.

“We are going to add bike lanes and we’re going to add a 10-foot concrete multi-use trail on the east side of that road,” said City Engineer David Campbell. “Then we are going to mill, resurface and restripe the roadway.”

Currently, Hutchinson Street has 5-foot sidewalks on either side of the road, and does not have bike lanes.

“It was decided many years ago that it was a high priority for the Transportation Planning Organization,” Campbell said when asked the reason for the improvements.

He told The Log that the project is to be federally funded and administered through the Florida Department of Transportation and its Local Agency Program.

“It sits in with our multi-modal transportation system in Destin and makes it easier for folks to use different transportation options in Destin, such as walking and bicycling,” he said.

The city of Destin is currently receiving bids for the project which is anticipated to take 120 calendar days to complete.

“We’re probably going to start work in February and hope to be complete before summer,” said Campbell.

Bids must be received by the city no later that 2 p.m., Jan. 8.
