This week in Destin history: Fireworks malfunctions

35 years ago — 1978

The Destin Lions Club voted to support a plan creating a public park with recreational facilities near Destin Airport. Financing was expected to come from the state, with maintenance by Okaloosa County.

Village Baptist Church prepared to dedicate its new sanctuary on Matthew Boulevard.

A Destin Log editorial opposed a proposal creating a 2 percent bed tax because the money could not be used to clean beaches or for law enforcement along the beaches.

Two blue marlin were taken from the Gulf — one at 545 1/2 pounds and the other a 433 1/2 pounder.

 

30 years ago — 1983

Destin Fire Chief Terry Watkins assured Destin the fire department would not leave the community unprotected in a hurricane, with at least one engine remaining in a category 5 storm.

Dedication ceremonies were held for the 18- by 22-foot American flag atop the pole at Sexton's Seafood. The flag was dedicated to several early Destin fishermen and their families.

Four people, including three members of the Destin Search and Recovery Unit, were hospitalized after what may have been faulty fireworks going off too near the ground.

A 489 1/2-pound tiger shark, caught aboard the Finest Kind, led the annual Destin Shark Tournament.

 

25 years ago — 1988

The city of Destin's first FourthFest was rated a success, even though $10,000 worth of fireworks exploded on the ground. There were no injuries.

The Destin Log welcomed its new publisher, Michael Levi.

The Destin Harbor Board voted to hold a public hearing to get citizens' input on how to improve safety in the harbor.

 

20 years ago — 1993

In a Log editorial, city fathers were asked to consider a safe speed limit to protect the harbor as the waters are becoming overcrowded.

Hunter Henderson Forbes, 10 1/2-month-old son of Gina Henderson and Troy Forbes, took first place in the 9 to 12 months age group of the Most Beautiful Baby Contest at Babyland in Fort Walton Beach.

 

10 years ago — 2003

Jim Wheeler, executive director of the Destin Harbor Business Association, and Jeanne Dailey, president of Destin Area Chamber of Commerce, step up their arguments in favor of the proposed multimillion-dollar beach renourishment project.

David Seering and David Ott perform a patriotic concert for Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation.
