Although the city has money to fund the project, they will be seeking funding for pedestrian improvements along Calhoun Avenue through the Florida Department of Transportation.
“The completion of the pedestrian improvements on Calhoun will enhance the redevelopment opportunities and connectivity between Clement Taylor Park and the festival marketplace in the harbor area,” City Manager Greg Kisela told The Log.
With a unanimous vote Monday night, city leaders issued a resolution that allows them to apply for transportation alternatives program funds, which may help fund all or a portion of the $300,000 project.
As part of the pedestrian improvements, the city aims to construct a 10-foot wide pathway from the west side of Calhoun to the north side of U.S. Hwy. 98, as well as extending east on Zerbe Street and connecting to the public parking lot.
The new sidewalk will eventually link to the proposed boardwalk underneath the Marler Bridge and will feature lighting, landscaping and street furniture.
Public Information Manager Doug Rainer told The Log that the city more than likely wouldn’t find out whether or not its secured funding till November or December.
With that said, whether or not the city receives funds from the FDOT work on the pedestrian improvements is expected to begin in early to mid 2016.
