One couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day to celebrate Arbor Day than Friday, as the sun cast a warmth over the city’s celebration at Buck Destin Park.

“You’re planting the future when you plant a tree,” Larry Williams, Okaloosa County extension agent, told the crowd of about 30.

Williams was joined by Mayor Mel Ponder, members of the city’s Environmental/Tree Committee and students from the Childcare Network for the annual celebration.

According to the proclamation read by Ponder, “trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, reduce heating a cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife.

City leaders and volunteers planted a Live Oak tree, which was donated by Vision Landscaping, in honor of the late Evelyn Drowne and Paul Ratzel.
