Members of the American Legion Post 296 are set to honor those who served, and currently serve, our country during Monday's Memorial Day Ceremony.

"Memorial Day was originally Decoration Day and was founded to honor the soldiers who died in the Civil War," said Skip Overdier, first vice commander at the American Legion Post 296. "We've learned that freedom is never free. Take time to day to reflect on the sacrifices of the men and wen who have given the supreme sacrifice for freedom."

The annual ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at the Destin Memorial Cemetery at 108 Stalhman Avenue and will feature guest speaker SMSgt Melissa Levister, United States Air Force (Active).

Levister is the Superintendent Host Aviation Resource Management, 96th Operation Support Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base and oversees the aviation resource management program for the operations group.

The day's events will also see the traditional placement of the wreath, a T-6 Texan flyover salute and a rifle salute and performance of "Taps" by the Eglin Air Force Base Honor Guard.

For more information about the ceremony, contact the American Legion Post 296 at 837-3818. Free food and beverages will be available at the Post (311 Main Street) after the ceremony.
