Promoting Growth: Destin Water Users Replacing Sewer Lines

Destin Water Users (DWU) started a two-phase project last week to improve the sewage lines along Calhoun Ave.

“We had some problems during the April 30th rain event in 2014,” said Destin Water Users General Manager Lockwood Wernet. “What that showed us was that the lift stations are not a problem right now, but it was time to go ahead a make repairs and prepare for future development.”

Wernet explained that the current lift station on Calhoun Avenue is old, and the  force main in front of Clement Taylor park is too small for the population it serves.

“It was sized for the original development, which was a lot of small residential buildings,” he said. “The pipe was small and manhole was small. As we’ve seen growth in the area, we realize we need to have a larger lift station to serve the future growth and development.”

The first phase of the project is expected to take 45 days and run from Calhoun Avenue in front of Clement Taylor Park to Stahlman Avenue and north to Pine Street. The work will be completed by Gulf Coast Utility Contractors and is expected to cost $180,000 which will come from DWU’s general revenue fund.

“The first phase is replacing the force main, there is an existing four-inch sewer line and we are replacing it with an 8-inch sewer line,” Wernet said. “It was something on our five-year capitol improvement program and last year made us move it up on our priority list.”

Wernet said that the work will not impede traffic as it will be done in the swale area right-of-way from the edge of road up to the point of the public or private property. The first phase is expected to be finished by August with the next phase scheduled for late fall.

“The second phase is to replace the wet well, which is the lift station at Clement Taylor Park,” Wernet said. “It is one of our older lift stations and is a little bit small for the area. What we see in the city’s comprehensive plan is a potential for redevelopment along the bay, and Sibert. People are buying up lots and subdividing them. So it will accommodate for future growth in the area.”
