 35 years ago — 1978

Local builders reported the cost of a typical 1,500- to 1,600-square-foot house had increased from $16-$18 a square foot in 1972-1973 to $32-$34 a square foot in 1978.

The winning shark for the 30th annual Destin Fishing Rodeo was a 550-pound dusky.

While Bob Hope golfed at Sandestin, his plane’s pilot and copilot fished with Capt. Ken Beaird on the Reveille II and even won a daily wahoo trophy in the rodeo.

The Destin Log announced its first subscription rate increase, from $5 to $7 a year.

 30 years ago — 1983

Construction permits in Destin topped $12 milliion for the month of September.

Sherry Potts won first place in the Destin PTO Fall Festival poster contest.

Bob Hope golfed in Sandestin, but said his schedule did not allow time to try his luck at the Destin Fishing Rodeo.

Couch Construction Co. was low bidder on the relocation of U.S. 98 which would move a four-laned 98 inland from Airport Road to three miles inside Walon County.

 25 years ago — 1988

Eight candidates were in the running for four seats on the Destin City Council.

 20 years ago — 1993

City Council tackles question of businesses operating in the harbor, with requests to operate a lawyer’s office and a real estate office from a docked boat; rental by the night of a docked boat; and rental of a houseboat/pontoon docked either away from dock or left at dock.

Last weekend of the Rodeo sees no fish caught on Saturday and only three on Sunday, due to cold and windy conditions.

The new owner of Destin Hospital was Columbia Healthcare Inc., the end product of at least two mergers and the breakup of Humana’s hospital system. New director was Rick Palumbo from St. Petersburg.

New voter registration cards were mailed to all Destin residents and a third precinct was added.

 10 years ago — 2003

The Destin Urgent Care Center on Airport Road was licensed as a hospital emergency room and as such, ambulances could take patients there rather than going to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.

What began as a sailboat trip to Key West for three Destin residents ended in a water rescue by the South Walton Fire District near Miramar Beach as six-foot seas drove the vessel on to the beach.

Destin hired Gregory Kisela, current assistant city manager of Fort Lauderdale, as its new city manager.

More than a thousand people lined up for a free popcorn and cola to see an already-run movie in state-of-the-art ambiance at the new Rave Motion Pictures in Destin Commons.

Snowbirds were spotted in Destin at the local Walmart and the storage locker was opened.
