35 years ago — 1978

Dick McHarg received the Destin Chamber of Commerce Ross Marler Citizenship Award.

The Destin Library and the Destin Volunteer Fire Department received $1,000 each from the proceeds of the Lakeshore Woman’s Club Mistletoe Ball.

Jerry Najarian volunteered to oversee Destin’s community blood drive at St. Andrew’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church.

Destin prepared to celebrate its 63rd annual Children’s Christmas Party at Destin Elementary.

 

30 years ago — 1983

The 1983 Mistletoe Ball raised $5,000 for improvements to Calhoun Park.

Plans for a 450-room hotel were announced for the site of the Riviera Motel on U. S. 98.

Two women were seriously injured when a propane gas explosion ripped through a U.S. 98 office.

St. Andrew’s By-the-Sea announced plans for a new 600-seat church and a mission in south Walton County.

 

25 years ago — 1988

Destin City Attorney Jerry Miller was elected chairman of the 1st Congressional District for the Florida Democratic Party.

The Destin Elkettes raised $3,000 to support the Florida Elks Children’s Hospital and the Elks National Foundation.

 

20 years ago — 1993

Destin City Council approved the purchase of 12 acres near Joe’s Bayou boat ramp, which carries a price tag of almost $300,000. The city hopes to secure a grant to develop the area.

Cajun’s restaurant provided the second annual Sharing Christmas Dinner free to the community with Destin United Methodist Church providing transportation for those needing it or delivery to homebound residents.

With 82 entrants, the eighth annual Destin Christmas Parade was the biggest in the history of the parade with thousands lining the parade route.

Christmas turkey was 68 cents a pound and Christmas ham 99 cents a pound at Winn Dixie.

Destin was targeted for a new hotel brand, Hampton Inn & Suites.

Boxes of food, clothing and toys filled the lobby of The Destin Log as donations poured in for the Neighbors In Need program.

A proposed amendment to Destin’s land development code could legalize the common practice of renting boat slips on Holiday Isle.

 

10 years ago — 2003

Chef Tim Creehan of Destin’s Beach Walk Café released his second cookbook, “Simple Cuisine,” which included 200 of his favorite recipes and celebrity dishes.
