Residents and visitors in South Walton and Destin will be taking the plunge to celebrate the new year.
Polar Bear Plunge
The Destin Fire Rescue Foundation’s annual Polar Bear Plunge is at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 1 behind The Crab Trap at James Lee Park in Destin. A $20 donation entry fee helps raise funds for the Destin Junior Lifeguards. First 100 receive a T-shirt. Call 685-0408 for more information. Beach Saftey chief Joe D'Agostino said the event has been happening in Destin for about 7 or 8 years.
Polar Bear Splash
The first ever SWFD Polar Bear Splash will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 1 at Ed Walline Park. All proceeds from $20 donation will benefit the SWFD Department Relations Committee. In the event of Red Flag Conditions, the plunge will relocate to the Gulf Place Community Park Pool. Email ssanchez@swfd.org for information. "The invigorating event will surely get your blood flowing, and for those that brave the winter waters, we will also be hosting a beach bonfire to warm you up," wrote the fire district's Sammy Sanchez.
