This week in Destin history: Plumbers stay busy with bust pipes during cold freeze

35 years ago — 1979

Twelve residents ran for four vacancies on the Destin Community Center Board of Directors.

The state Department of Natural Resources proposed a new setback line along U.S. 98 east of Destin that allowed construction between 98 and the Gulf.

 

30 years ago — 1984

Dolphin Point resident Glenda Rainer sheltered a brown pelican, which was trying to escape Destin’s frigid weather, in her condominium bathroom.

Destin area plumbers were kept busy working on burst pipes during the region’s worst freeze in 40 years.

 

25 years ago — 1989

Jim “Steamer” Stanley was in critical condition in the burn unit of a Memphis hospital after his boat, The Guinea Girl, exploded and burned on Joe’s Bayou.

Emerald Breeze Estates in Destin was the first single-family development announced for 1989.

 

20 years ago — 1994

Federal investigators continued their investigation into the crash of a Piper 46-A Malibu that crashed in Kell-Aire Gardens. Killed were the pilot and his wife, George and Winnie Batsche from Texas, who had strong ties to Destin.

The Fort Walton Beach High School Viking Cheerleaders brought home a ninth place ranking from the National Cheerleader Association’s largest National High School Cheerleading Championship held in Dallas.

Dewey Destin said that sea turtles and dolphins are not threatened by the 5,000 commercial fishing boats, but are by the 500,000 recreational boats in Florida.

Destin’s new city code enforcement director tackles his first job — the new sign ordinance.

 

10 years ago — 2004

Marina Café and Destin Chops earned the Distinguished Restaurants of North America award.

PetsMart and Linens ‘n Things signed to join Michael’s in the Shoppes at Paradise Isle center at the intersection of U.S. 98 and Mid-Bay Bridge Road.

Destin Snowbirds number 1,000 at start of new year.
