If a wintery mix falls on Northwest Florida, the bridges are the “main concern,” Okaloosa County emergency officials say.
But some caution on the part of drivers and sand for traction should keep travelers safe on the spans.
“There are no plans to close any bridges right now,” said Randy McDaniel at Okaloosa County Emergency Management.
The Department of Transportation will be monitoring state bridges like Brooks, Marler and the Mid-Bay bridges. McDaniel said FDOT would have sand spreader trucks and crews on standby. Because there are no major salt reserves, crews will rely on sand to give traction to icy spots on bridges or elevated roadways.
As for smaller bridges maintained by the county, McDaniel said sand-filled dump trucks are being deployed near those spans.
“Right now we don’t expect the snow to stick to any streets,” he continued. “The ground is just too warm to freeze. People just need to exercise caution as they drive.”
