Some do it for exercise, others for fun — but most all would agree they're in it for the dance.
"My husband has completely given up on dancing, but not me," said Maggie Mays of Missouri. "It's good exercise and I just love dancing."
Mays is just one of about 35 who regularly attend the line dancing class taught by Aggie Marler on Thursday at the Destin Community Center.
"They are an interesting and fun group. They are very enthusiastic. I love my snowbirds," Marler said.
Marler has been line dancing for 12 years and teaching at the Community Center for about eight.
"We dance to all genres and rhythms. Line dancing is very versatile nowadays," Marler said.
As a matter of fact during last Thursday's session, the group danced to songs such as "Rockin' Robin," "Cowboy Boogey" and even the viral pop tune "What the Fox Say."
"It's good for your brain and good for exercise. You always meet somebody" said 84-year-old Sally Tar of Illinois as she sat down to take a break. "It's fun and you don't need a partner," Tar said.
Snowbird Maureen Lange of Michigan said she used to clog. So she was excited when she found out about the line dancing class in Destin. Now it is the first thing she signs up for each year.
"She's the best teacher," Lange said. "I like the movement … she teaches you things you never thought you could do. Plus you meet a lot of people that like to have fun."
For Anne Redyke of Navarre, it was her first time to attend the Destin class, but she was having a ball.
"I love the exercise, the music and the atmosphere. I just love to dance," said the 72-year-old.
And she wasn't the only one.
Dale and Geri Brown of Wisconsin dance about five times a week, including the line dancing class on Thursday.
The couple, who's been married for 46 years, said they have been dancing for about two decades.
"Most of my dancing is rum-induced," Dale said from the sidelines on a recent Thursday. "And I haven't had one today."
Joking aside, Dale said it's "a lot more fun than a treadmill."
"It's just good exercise and a lot of fun," Geri added.
