Usually the fire station is called to bring water to douse a fire, but this weekend the call went the other way. Destin’s Firehouse Subs restaurant called fire stations across the county to come pick up cases of water that had been collected throughout the day Saturday from local businesses and residents.
“It was H2O for heroes,” said Destin Firehouse Subs General Manager Eddie Lawrence. “The citizens that brought in a 24-pack of water got a free medium sub.”
But Lawrence revealed that the donations didn’t stop there. After Home Depot generously donated 84 cases of water, Lawrence got to work visiting other local businesses.
“I did it on my own time because it’s for the community, for a good cause,” said Lawrence.
He said he quickly accumulated hundreds of water cases as Lowes gave 37, Hancock Bank gave 50, Galati Yachts donated 60, Wal-Mart pitched in 144, and countless other citizens and local businesses got on board with the water drive as well.
“We ended up with over 400 cases of water,” said Lawrence. “It all goes to the needy, the homeless, the elderly. It’s also for the firefighters to use when they go on calls because it’s hot here!”
Destin’s Firehouse Subs collected so much water that it was able to donate cases not only to the Destin Fire Department but also Okaloosa Island, Niceville, Ocean City, and Fort Walton Beach fire departments.
“It turned out really great, better than I expected,” said Lawrence. “Everybody chipped in for a good cause.” Usually the fire station is called to bring water to douse a fire, but this weekend the call went the other way.
