35 years ago — 1978

The Destin Dazzlers baton troop took second place in the Billy Bowlegs Parade.

Destin area businesses reported a 10- to 20-percent increase in businesses over the same period in 1977.

Unless expansion plans began immediately, Destin Water Users officials were forecasting "bad trouble" due to the tremendous influx of new residents expected by the mid-1980s.

New owners bought the Tennessee Motel on U.S. 98 and changed the name to the Destination Motel.

 

30 years ago — 1983

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers told the Destin Charter Boat Association the weir in the east jetty should be closed to help keep the main East Pass channel from filling up.

The Best Western Village Inn of Destin opened on U.S. 98, and new owners took over Seascape Resort and Conference Center in South Walton.

 

25 years ago — 1988

The Destin Lions Club learned the Florida Freshwater Fish and Game Commission would no longer issue permits for the club's annual fund-raising gopher races.

 

20 years ago — 1993

Bill Burleson and his wife, Barbara (Babs), were named Seniors of Quarter for their community involvement such as organizing the Destin Volunteer Fire Department and working for the Destin Rodeo and Destin Fishing Muesum.

Marilyn Bacca was installed as president of the Destin Garden Club.

A coupon book good for 20 trips across the Mid-Bay Bridge went on sale for $20 in Destin.

 

10 years ago — 2003

Free shuttle service increases number of riders from 1,366 from May 23-30, 2002, to 2,771 passengers in 2003.
