Destin stargazers are still abuzz over the biggest and brightest full moon of the year, which graced the skies over the weekend. The so-called supermoon appeared up to 14 percent larger than normal as our celestial neighbor swung closer to Earth, reaching its closest distance early Sunday morning.

Jim Dunkle of Fort Walton Beach proved that moongazing is for the birds. He captured this
great blue heron enjoying the lunar lighthshow and an osprey with full moon fever on Okaloosa Island Friday.

Thomas J DeLuca, a Lansing, Mich., resident, shot the full moon over Destin from Silver Beach Towers.

Scott Jackson of Destin caught the super moon Saturday from hisback yard moments before a cloud bank obscured it. He used a Sigma 70-500 zoom on a tripod with remote shutter release.

Focusing On You Photography, based in Destin, shot this photo behind Signature Beach.

Lori Antman of Freeport shot this photo from her bayfront home, which she has nicknamed Fluffy Landing for obvious reasons. “I have taken a ton of pictures over the last year or so, mostly of my cats on the bay,” she said. “I have them on my Facebook page and Fluffy Landing actually has a following of friends and family!”

Moments after you could see the sun set in the windows of the Emerald Grande, the super moon began illuminating Destin Harbor.
