Monday was Dr. Seuss’ birthday and Destin Elementary School celebrated in true ‘Seussical’ style. Students came walking into the library wearing homemade red and white striped top hats, and as they sat down for reading time, they were surprised to find Principal Janet Stein waiting for them with a Horton elephant hat on her head.
“Did you know that Dr. Seuss when he was your age lived in a zoo?” she asked as the kids settled in. “I think that’s why he wrote so many books about animals.”
Stein then went on to read her favorite Dr. Seuss book, “Yurtle the Turtle,” to the group of about 60 students.
On March 2nd, Dr. Seuss’ birthday is celebrated in elementary schools nationwide in an event called Read Across America. The schools host events throughout the day to encourage extra reading time during school hours and often bring in special guests to read to students. DES brought in representatives from Bubba Gump’s. Shrimp Louie and The Cat in the Hat were on hand to pose with students and encourage them to check out a book to read at home.
In the spirit of the day several students came dressed as Dr. Seuss characters Thing One and Thing Two and the iconic Cat in the Hat.
