Grab your glow sticks and running shoes and head to Nightown this Saturday for Destin’s inaugural Zoolectric 5K to benefit the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge.

“This is the first year we are putting this on and 100 percent of the proceeds will go directly to the Wildlife Refuge,” said Development Coordinator for the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge Iginia Parish. “The money will go to providing animal care, food and proper care for orphaned or injured animals indigenous to Florida and to enrichment of our exotic animals at the ECWR Zoo.”

Parish told The Log that the race is sure to be bright and electrifying as runners take to the streets under black lights.

“We are encouraging runners to bring their own glow gear and wear white,” said Parish. “Also at packet pick up we are going to have some glow gear, and T-shirts for each runner and Night Town is donating white sunglasses that glow under the black light.”

The 3.1-mile course will circle through Destin neighborhood roads featuring glow zones and entertainment to keep the pace lively and exciting.

“We have on-course entertainment through a local lighting company called TSC Productions,” said Parish. “They will have one glow zone set up on the course and a big one at the finish line to boost moral and get everyone energized for the finish line.”

However the finish line is not the end of the race but instead it’s where the party gets pumped into full gear.

“Nightown is hosting a glow after-party, so even if the run gets rained out those who registered can enjoy two free drinks from 8 to 9 p.m. and half off entry to the club,” said Parish.

The Zoolectic run is set to begin at 7 p.m. on March 7 and start and end at Nightown at 140 Palmetto Street. Registration is $25 prior to the race and $30 day of. For more information or to register for the run, visit www.ecwildliferefuge.com/zoolectricrun or call 650-1800.
