Vegetation such as bushes and trees planted in the right of way near roadways and sidewalks usually have to be approved an permitted by the city. One of the reasons for this is to ensure that when the plants mature, they don’t become a hazard to pedestrians and motorists. Many of the sidewalk repairs we do are a result of trees being planted too close to the sidewalk. As the tree matures, the roots push the concrete up causing tripping hazards. Additionally, when bushes are planted, especially on corner lots near intersections, people fail to keep them trimmed. This results in motorists being unable to see oncoming traffic when stopped at the stop sign.
