Eleven-year-old soccer player and Destin local, Adriana Figueroa, had her eyes glued to the screen on Sunday as the Women’s World Cup Final pitted teams U.S.A. and Japan against each other for a second time in recent FIFA history.

Four years ago, she watched with the rest of the world as this pairing ended in a loss for team U.S.A. in overtime penalty kicks. This year however, team U.S.A. came out blazing, scoring four goals in the first 16 minutes, three of which were scored by midfielder Carli Lloyd.

“When they scored it was really cool how they did it,” Adriana said of the game. “It was amazing how fast the girls passed the ball and how they worked together as a team.”

Adriana watched the game with her travel soccer team, Chivas Futbol Club of Fort Walton Beach at Buffalo Wild Wings in Uptown Station, and said she and her teammates were quite the rowdy bunch.

“We were all sitting at one table, and when they scored everyone would get up and cheer,” said Adriana. “We were really excited because last time they lost to Japan.”

Adriana’s 10-year-old brother, Luis Jose (LJ) Figueroa also watched the game with the group as part of the Chivas FC boys squad. When asked if the game inspired him, and other boys like him, he said, “If they win, that means I can win.”

Echoing the popular hashtag #OneNationOneTeam, LJ confirmed the fact that sports really do bring the country together, and also proved that the Women’s team can inspire young girls and boys alike.

“I want to play soccer for as long as I can play,” said LJ. “And I want to play in professionals.”

When asked what his favorite part of the game was, LJ didn’t skip a beat, “When the girl scored from half field,” he said. “When U.S.A. scored everybody was like U-S-A! U-S-A!”

With joy and lot of cheering, the Chivas watched as team U.S.A. reigned victorious on Sunday with a 5-2 win over Japan. The women claimed the third Women's World Cup Championship title for the U.S., the first in 16 years for the country.
