The Destin Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization has an active stance on community involvement and this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the PTO is taking initiative to help
“School hasn’t started yet, so we are doing that to kind of gear up,” said Destin PTO President Audrey Jacobs. “As people go in and out of the Destin Wal-Mart they can donate to help provide supplies to students starting up the new school year. The idea is for the items to go to those students in need.”
The items on the shopping list detail everything necessary for a student to begin the new school year including a new backpack, folders, paper, crayons, markers, pencils, scissors and rulers. The goal is to cram the van full of these items, that will then be distributed by the
Cram the Van events are taking place every weekend until early August from DeFuniak Springs to Santa Rosa Beach, with several local businesses and partner agencies donating time and supplies to the event.
Jacobs told The Log that being proactive in helping area students just comes with the territory of being a PTO parent.
“We are an organization that is set forward to provide support for education of all students in our school, raise funds and provide support in classrooms, and keep communication between our families, staff and students,” she said.
For his part, new Principal Al Gardner said he is excited to start the school year and work alongside such a dedicated group of parents.
“We are very fortunate to have an involved PTO to support the schools projects and technology,” he said.
